This is what I personally do, but I start most of my matches by jumping and holding the triangle smash. Most people start the match mashing square or blocking to sidestep. An air smash catches many off guard and can break guard and leads to an opening to convert damage off of.
Using L1 to escape is a lifesaver. A lot of really damaging combos people did on me could be escaped. You don't need timing, just mash L1. That made the game a whole lot bearable.
Use the L1 dash!! Most people try to close in by using rushes or walking up to you, using your L1 covers way more distance and catches many people who aren't paying attention off guard.
Really utilize your guard. Not many people have gotten a grasp on how to get past guards and expect their opponent to mash buttons. If you guard on wake up and use your escape to increase distance, you can catch your opponent pressing buttons. Don't be afraid to be passive and guard a whole combo, the opening in which to attack is very obvious. If you see something fishy, sidestep.
Try to finish up combos with specials. Using specials to end a combo with most characters can put distance between you and your opponent and can be followed up with support.
